STATE AND ACTIVE VERBS:
1. There are State and Action Verbs. Verbs used statively show conditions or situations that exist. Verbs used actively show action. Some verbs are basically stative and are rarely used actively. Examples of these are: want, need, like, own, belong. Other verbs are often used statively but sometimes used actively taking on different meaning. Examples of these are: have (= possess - stative) / have (= eat or drink - active), be (=exist - stative) / be (= behave - active), think (= believe - stative) / think (= work mentally - active), and the sense verbs: see, hear, taste feel, smell.
2. Most of the English verbs are used in both Simple and Continuous tenses. e.g. She usually drives to work but today she isn’t driving she is walking. But state verbs are not usually used in the Continuous tenses, they are used in Simple tenses. They can be used in Continuous tenses, but with the change of meaning. It is better to memorize them.
e.g. I like black coffee. Do you know the answer? I enjoy traveling now. 3. When we want to emphasize that something is done repeatedly, we can use Present Continuous with words like always, constantly, continually, forever which are typical for Present Simple according to general rule. Often we do this when we want to show that we are unhappy about it. e.g. They are constantly having parties until the early hours in the morning. You are always complaining about her handwriting. 4. The word there shows the existence of something. It can be used with the verb to be in the past, present and future. It is only used with Simple, but with not Continuous tenses e.g. In a Sushi restaurant in London, there are robots that serve drinks. There have been a lot of people working there.
